Here are the requirements to get loads from brokers and shippers as well as maintain and activate your Motor Carrier Authoirty or MC Number and protect yourself and your equipment.
Primary Auto Liabilty Insurance. This protects you if you cause property damage or bodily injury to others. An Insurance agent like Pete Pomerenke of Truck Insurance Mart Inc in Kansas City 913 -461- 6850 also needs to send a BMC91X filing to the FMCSA in Washington DC on your behalf to activate your Motor Carrier Number. The limit required is usually $1,000,000
The cost for this coverage is usually between $4500 and $6000 per year.
Cargo Insurance. This protects the cargo that you will haul against Collision, Fire, Theft, Vandilism and other named perils. If you haul autos, refrigerated freight or flatbed you may want to consider 150,000 to 200,000 limit. But generally most brokers will want you to carry at a minimum 100,000. You will usually have a deductible of $1000 to meet before coverage is paid.
The cost for this coverage is usually between $1000 and $1500 per year.
Physical Damage Insurance. This protects your Truck and Trailer against Collision, Fire, Theft, Vandilism and other named perils. You will usually have a $1,000 deductible and want to value your equipment for what it is worth or the loan value you financed.
The cost for this coverage is based on the value of your equipment usually about $400 per $10,000 value of your equipment so a truck worth $20,000 would be $800 per year.
General Auto Liability. This protects you from accidents that do not involve the truck but other trucking operations such as unloading autos, or unloading a flatbed with a forklift and you damage property or cause bodily injury with the auto or the forklift. This coverage is not required to obtain or activate your Motor Carrier Authority but some brokers may require it to book a load. The limit required is usually $1,000,000.
